One of the distinguishing features of the Fathom 40 is its modern hull design. The company wanted to offer a yacht that retained all of the seaworthy characteristics that traditional trawlers are known for while also providing the owner with the option of traveling at a more expedient pace.
In order to accomplish this Fathom enlisted the skills of naval architect Greg Marshall. By utilizing a single lifting chine in conjunction with modern lightweight manufacturing techniques Fathom was able to achieve their desired outcome of seaworthiness & expediency.
However, do not be mislead, lightweight does not equate to a weaker structure. Conversely, some of the lightest boats in the world, i.e. Whitbread racing sailboats, are some of the strongest hulls on the water. More important than laminate thickness is laminate quality. Fathom utilizes the proven infusion process of lamination. This results in a more uniform laminate that uses less resin and minimizes air bubbles in the resin. Excess resin and bubbles equate to weakness. Infusion also results in a much tighter laminate given that the atmosphere is essentially compressing the glass layers together. The result is a less bulky but highly compressed & therefore dense hull skin that is superior to hand laid hulls.
