Fathom 40: Fast Expedition Yacht
Fathom 40 Reviews
Michelle & Zak's Review
Michelle & I were introduced to the Fathom 40 in the fall of 2007. We were intrigued by the concept of a "performance trawler." Upon further exploration we felt the boat warranted a personal inspection & sea trial. We flew up to Washington where we met with Tracy & Rick, operating principles of the company. The boat certainly did not disappoint.
The interior layout was especially noteworthy for a vessel of this size. The saloon/galley area was bright, roomy & had an inviting flow. Those working in the galley were in no way excluded from people visiting in the saloon. The saloon settee was especially comfortable due to the choice of foam & material as well as the fact that the seat backs were all angled to provide a much more natural seating position, a detail lacking on virtually all boats today. The pilothouse was equally inviting due to the same settee configuration & the abundance of windows on all sides.
Moving down below we were impressed by the head design. What could be impressive about a head? Well, most boats have a cramped restroom with mediocre quality fixtures. The Fathom 40 was spacious, bright, outfitted with top quality fixtures & had a shower that put many 50' boats to shame. We could easily see our customers cruising with family or friends and having no problems given this arrangement.
The staterooms were very accommodating. The master stateroom had a large head height closet that was a surprise. The master bed was cleverly designed to hinge up thus providing access to a large storage locker. It seemed everywhere we looked there were these insightful details that collectively just made good sense.
Underway the boat performed as expected. I think we hit a top speed of around 18 knots & did it with minimal bow rise. It was quite pleasant. What was not anticipated was the incredible fuel economy at displacement speeds. Keep in mind that hull#1 was virtually empty, but nonetheless we were burning less than 3 gallons per hour at around 8.5 knots. This is a real testament to the weight savings & the highly efficient 5-blade prop.
All in all, I was very impressed with the build quality & especially the assortment of ingenious details found throughout the entire vessel. For boaters interested in a luxuriously appointed yacht at a more affordable price & size the Fathom 40 may be the perfect fit!
